The Affliction of Saturn
Art Statement
Although the accompaniment may vary, the underlying throb of life remains consistent over time. The questions we ask ourselves, the ways we define ourselves may mutate dramatically from one generation to the next. Most, at one time or another, are tempted to retreat to a comfortable place that they remember but never really existed in the past. It is a sign of healthy growth and maturity when we can resist that siren call. Most, at one time or another, are tempted to retreat to a comfortable place that they remember but never really existed in the past. In this painting, I represent the pointlessness of regressive goals with Sisyphus. Saturn represents old ideas trying to creep their way back in. I also represent the futility that we all feel in the battle of daily life by Atlas trying to hold up the world during a battle. The Ship of Theseus represents our identity. Sometimes, we seem so different from who we once were, and sometimes, we experience the deja vu of feelings from our ancient past. Plato hovers in the clouds, raining down his Platonic ideas, and I use Sierpinski's Triangles threaded through the tree roots to represent perfection. Overhead, the Eye of God represents objective reality.
